The novel is part I of a three part series. There are 29 chapters. It is narrated by Daia (the protagonist)- who takes us on a journey recapping her life and the events that led up to her fleeing Brooklyn, N.Y. and retreating to her childhood vacation destination in Oracabessa, Jamaica. She is a character that one would initially love, then hate, then love. She is a wife, a mom, an educator, partner of a charter school for teen moms. She grew up in a traditional household in Old Mill Basin, Brooklyn. She lived with her maternal grandparents, her parents and her two younger siblings. After having her children she suffers from postpartum depression and is forced to work from home. Her family was her rock that kept her sane. Until she learned who they truly were.
